The Big Five (with runners up):

The 100 Years' War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi (2020)
A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017

Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members, mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists, this seminal work upends accepted interpretations of the colonization of Palestine. Instead of framing the conflict as a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process with which he himself was involved.

  • Runners up by Rashid Khalidi: Palestinian Identity (1997), The Iron Cage (2006), Brokers of Deceit (2013). An unofficial trilogy of works on Palestinian history, politics, and struggle for identity. Khalidi weaves together historical documents, personal stories, and political analysis to present a nuanced perspective on Palestinian nationalism, the obstacles to statehood, and the external influences that have shaped the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From the late Ottoman period to the present day, these works collectively trace the evolution of Palestinian identity, the entrapments of colonial and post-colonial power dynamics, and the role of international diplomacy in the ongoing quest for peace in the Middle East.

Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History by Nur Masalha (2018)

Starting with the earliest references in Egyptian and Assyrian texts, this comprehensive work explores how Palestine and its Palestinian identity have evolved over thousands of years, from the Bronze Age to the present day. Drawing on a rich body of sources and the latest archaeological evidence, Masalha shows how Palestine's multicultural past has been distorted and mythologized by Biblical lore and Zionist propaganda, known as “hasbara.” In the process, Masalha reveals that the concept of Palestine is not a modern invention or one constructed in opposition to Israel, but rooted firmly in ancient past, beyond even Herodotus. This book represents the authoritative account of the country's history.

  • Runner up by Nur Masalha: The Palestine Nakba: Decolonising History, Narrating the Subaltern, Reclaiming Memory (2012). Explores “social history from below”, subaltern narratives of memory and the formation of collective identity. Masalha argues that to write more truthfully about the Nakba is not just to practise a professional historiography but an ethical imperative. The struggles of ordinary refugees to recover and publicly assert the truth about the Nakba is a vital way of protecting their rights and keeping the hope for peace with justice alive.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappé (2006)

This groundbreaking work offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of the horrific events leading up to and following the mass forced expulsion of over 750,000 Palestinian Arabs from their homeland, an event known as the “Nakba” or the Catastrophe. Between 1947 and 1949, over 500 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed as civilians were massacred and expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. Indispensable reading.

Ten Myths About Israel by Ilan Pappé (2017)

This book is directed at audiences with pre-existing notions of Palestine and the Zionist movement. Many are not aware that they were only taught a small part of the full story, an aggressively whitewashed version that depicts Zionism as anything but a modern settler colonial movement. This relatively quick and accessible read addresses the following myths:

  1. Palestine was an empty land
  2. The Jews were a people without a land
  3. Zionism is Judaism
  4. Zionism is not colonialism
  5. The Palestinians voluntarily left their homeland in 1948
  6. The June 1967 war was a war of ‘No Choice’
  7. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East
  8. The Oslo Mythologies
  9. The Gaza Mythologies
  10. The Two-States Solution is the only way forward

The Palestine Laboratory by Antony Loewenstein (2022)
How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World

Israel’s military industrial complex uses the occupied Palestinian territories as a testing ground for weaponry and surveillance technology that they then export around the world to despots and democracies alike. Over a half century of occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has given the Israeli state invaluable experience in controlling an “enemy” population, the Palestinians. It’s here that they have perfected the architecture of control. Lowenstein shows in-depth how Palestine has become the perfect laboratory for the Israeli military-techno complex, from surveillance, home demolitions, and indefinite incarceration to the hi-tech tools that power the 'Start-up Nation'. Israel has become a global leader in spy technology and defence hardware that fuels the globe’s most brutal conflicts. As ethno-nationalism grows in the 21st century, Israel has built the ultimate model.

Documentaries

  • Watch for free on YouTube. When Monear Shaer first started making a slideshow about his Palestinian family, he thought he was highlighting the beauty of life in Gaza. But when the onslaught of the 2023 invasion developed, it became imperative that the true reality and first hand experience of life in his family’s homeland is shown to the world. Monear’s first feature-length documentary shows just a few of the millions of heartbreaking injustices that have been occurring over the last several decades.
